You hit print — and nothing happens. Or the printer says it's "offline" even though it's clearly on. Or it prints one page and jams. Printers are famously frustrating, but most problems are solved by one of seven common fixes. Try these before calling for help.
This guide works for HP, Canon, Epson, and Brother printers — the most common brands in Edmonton homes.
Fix 1 — Turn Everything Off and Back On
It sounds obvious, but this solves about 30% of printer problems. The right order matters:
- Turn off the printer using its power button.
- Unplug the power cable from the back of the printer (not just the wall).
- Restart your computer.
- Wait 60 seconds, then plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Try printing again.
Why this works: Printers have their own small computer inside. Cutting power clears memory errors, jammed print queues, and stale wireless connections that a simple restart won't fix.
Fix 2 — Clear the Print Queue
A stuck print job in the queue blocks all new prints. Here's how to clear it:
- Windows: Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → click your printer → Open print queue. Select all jobs (Ctrl+A) and delete them.
- Mac: System Settings → Printers & Scanners → click your printer → Open Print Queue. Click the X next to each job.
If jobs won't delete, restart the Print Spooler service (Windows) or restart the printer and try again.
Fix 3 — Set Your Printer as Default
Windows sometimes forgets which printer is the default and sends jobs to a virtual PDF printer or an old printer that no longer exists:
- Windows: Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → click your printer → Set as default.
- Also uncheck "Let Windows manage my default printer" if that option appears — it can cause confusion.
Fix 4 — Check the Wireless Connection
Most home printers now connect over Wi-Fi, and Wi-Fi problems are very common:
- Make sure your printer and computer are on the same Wi-Fi network (not one on 2.4 GHz and the other on 5 GHz — they look the same but are separate).
- Check the printer's own screen — does it show connected, or does it show a Wi-Fi error icon?
- If it shows a Wi-Fi error: on most printers, go to Settings → Wireless Setup Wizard and reconnect to your router.
- Move the printer closer to your router if the signal is weak.
Tip: If your printer connects by USB cable and it still says "offline", try a different USB port on your computer, or a different cable — the cable itself is often the culprit.
Fix 5 — Remove a Paper Jam (Even the Hidden Ones)
Paper jams are often obvious, but sometimes a small torn piece is stuck inside where you can't see it:
- Turn off and unplug the printer before reaching inside.
- Open every door and tray — front, back, and the paper feed tray.
- Remove paper slowly and gently; pulling too hard can tear it and make things worse.
- Use a flashlight to look for small torn pieces inside the paper path.
- Close everything, plug back in, and try again.
Fix 6 — Update or Reinstall the Driver
After a Windows update, printer drivers sometimes break. Here's how to fix it:
- Go to the printer manufacturer's website (hp.com, canon.ca, epson.ca, brother.ca) and download the latest driver for your printer model and Windows version.
- Or use Windows Update: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates → View optional updates → Driver updates.
- If reinstalling: first remove the printer from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners, then add it back after installing the new driver.
Fix 7 — Run the Printer Troubleshooter
Windows has a built-in diagnostic that catches many problems automatically:
- Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Printer → Run.
- On Windows 10: Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Printer → Run the troubleshooter.
Mac users: go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners → click your printer → Reset printing system (last resort — removes all printers).

Solution 1 — Tout éteindre et rallumer
Solution 2 — Vider la file d'impression
Solution 3 — Définir l'imprimante par défaut
Solution 4 — Vérifier la connexion Wi-Fi
Solution 5 — Retirer un bourrage papier
Solution 7 — Utiliser le dépanneur Windows
Paramètres → Système → Résoudre les problèmes → Autres dépanneurs → Imprimante → Exécuter.
