If your kids use a family computer or a personal device, setting up parental controls is one of the most effective ways to protect them online — from inappropriate content, excessive screen time, and contact from strangers. This guide walks you through the exact steps for Windows 11, Mac, iPhone, and Android.
Windows 11 — Microsoft Family Safety
Microsoft has built solid parental controls directly into Windows 11 via the Family Safety app. Here's how to set it up:
- Go to Settings → Accounts → Family and add your child's Microsoft account (create one if needed — it's free).
- Sign in to family.microsoft.com to manage screen time limits, block apps, and filter websites.
- Enable Content Filters to block adult sites and restrict searches to SafeSearch.
- Set Daily Screen Time Limits per device — e.g. 2 hours on weekdays, 4 on weekends.
- View Activity Reports to see what sites and apps your child uses.
Tip: Microsoft Family Safety also works on Xbox — great if your kids game on console.
Mac — Screen Time (macOS)
On a Mac, parental controls are handled through Screen Time, available in System Settings:
- Open System Settings → Screen Time and click Set Up Screen Time for Family.
- Add your child's Apple ID (or create a child account via Family Sharing).
- Under Content & Privacy Restrictions, you can block explicit websites, restrict App Store purchases, and limit mature content.
- Use Downtime to schedule periods where only allowed apps are accessible (e.g. bedtime).
- Set an Screen Time passcode so your child can't change the settings.
Tip: If you use Family Sharing, you can manage all your children's Apple devices from your own iPhone — no need to touch their device each time.
iPhone & iPad — Screen Time
- Go to Settings → Screen Time on your child's device.
- Tap This is My Child's iPhone and set a Screen Time passcode (different from the device passcode).
- Enable Communication Limits to control who they can call or message.
- Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions → Web Content → Limit Adult Websites.
Android — Google Family Link
For Android devices, Google's Family Link app gives parents full visibility and control:
- Install Family Link on your phone (from the Play Store) and on your child's device.
- Create a supervised Google account for your child.
- Approve or block app downloads, set screen time schedules, and lock the device remotely.
- View your child's location on a map directly from the Family Link app.
Note: Family Link supervision ends automatically when the child turns 13 — Google will notify you in advance so you can decide whether to continue restrictions manually.
What Parental Controls Can't Do
No parental control tool is 100% foolproof. A determined teen can find workarounds — using a friend's device, a VPN, or an incognito browser. The most effective protection is a combination of technical controls and open conversations with your kids about online safety.
Also, parental controls don't protect against phishing emails or social engineering. Make sure your child knows never to click suspicious links or share personal information online.

Windows 11 — Microsoft Family Safety
Android — Google Family Link
