Getting a new computer? Before you donate, sell, or recycle your old one, there's one critical step most families skip: properly erasing your data. Simply deleting your files — or even doing a basic factory reset — is not enough. A determined person can recover your photos, passwords, and banking history from a "deleted" hard drive using free tools downloaded in minutes.
This guide shows you how to wipe your computer properly on Windows and Mac, and where to recycle it responsibly right here in Edmonton.
Warning: Never donate or give away a computer without wiping it first. Identity theft from old computers and hard drives is a real and growing problem. Canadian privacy law requires you to properly destroy personal data before disposing of devices.
Step 1 — Back Up Everything First
Before you wipe anything, make sure you have copies of everything you want to keep. A wipe is permanent — you cannot recover files after.
- Copy important files to an external hard drive or USB drive.
- Back up photos to Google Photos, iCloud, or OneDrive.
- Export browser bookmarks and saved passwords to your new computer.
- Note down any software license keys you might need again.
Tip: Use Windows Easy Transfer or the Mac Migration Assistant to move everything to your new computer before wiping the old one.
Step 2 — Sign Out of All Accounts
Before wiping, sign out of all major services to prevent the next owner from accessing them:
- iTunes / Apple ID: open iTunes or Music, go to Account → Authorizations → Deauthorize This Computer.
- Microsoft account: Settings → Accounts → Your info → Sign out.
- iCloud (Mac): System Settings → [Your Name] → Sign Out.
- Any other streaming or software services you use.
Step 3 — Wipe Windows 10 or 11 (Built-in Reset)
Windows 10 and 11 have a built-in reset option that securely wipes your drive:
- Go to Settings → System → Recovery.
- Under "Reset this PC", click Reset PC.
- Choose Remove everything (not "Keep my files").
- Choose Local reinstall (or Cloud download if your internet is fast).
- On the next screen, click Change settings and turn on Clean data (this overwrites the drive, making recovery nearly impossible).
- Click Confirm → Next → Reset.
The process takes 1–4 hours depending on drive size. Your computer will restart several times — this is normal.
Important: The "Clean data" option (also called "Remove files and clean the drive" in Windows 10) is what makes the wipe secure. Without it, deleted files can still be recovered.
Step 4 — Wipe a Mac (Apple Silicon or Intel)
The process differs slightly depending on your Mac's age:
- Mac with Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4 chip, 2020 or later): Shut down the Mac, then hold the power button until "Loading startup options" appears. Click Options → Continue → go to Utilities menu → Erase Mac. Follow the prompts to erase and reinstall macOS.
- Older Intel Mac (2019 or earlier): Restart and hold Cmd+R to enter Recovery Mode. Open Disk Utility, select Macintosh HD, click Erase. Use APFS format. Then close Disk Utility and choose Reinstall macOS.
Tip: After wiping, when you see the Setup Assistant on first boot, press Cmd+Q to quit and leave the Mac at the "Choose a country" screen. This is the cleanest handoff state for the next owner.
Step 5 — What About Old Hard Drives?
If your computer has a traditional spinning hard drive (HDD) rather than a solid-state drive (SSD), a single-pass reset may not be enough for true security. Consider:
- Free tools: DBAN (Darik's Boot and Nuke) is a free tool that boots from USB and securely overwrites every sector of a hard drive. It's overkill for most home users but gives total peace of mind.
- Physical destruction: If the computer is completely dead and you can't boot it, removing and physically destroying the hard drive is the most reliable option. Drilling 3–4 holes through the drive platter makes data recovery practically impossible.
- Professional data destruction: QuickFixIT Pro offers certified hard drive destruction for families and small businesses in Edmonton.
